Chasing Demons
Owning Your Struggles, Rewriting Your Story

Yes, you read that right—and yes, it’s another thought-provoking, attention-grabbing title (or at least, that’s what I hoped for).
Now that I’ve got your attention, your next question should be: What do I mean by “Chasing Demons?”
We Create Them... So We Must Chase Them
Ever heard the saying, “We create our own demons, so it’s on us to chase them away?”
Even if you haven’t, that’s exactly what I’m talking about.
I’m writing this piece for one reason: to chase some of mine away.
And no, I don’t mean literal demons. A “demon” could be anything—bad habits, addictions, limiting beliefs, fears, the obstacles we feel are holding us back. It’s different for everyone.
But here’s the truth: whatever your demon is, at some point, you helped create it.
I CREATED THEM. YOU CREATED THEM. WE CREATED THEM.
Maybe unconsciously. Maybe through repeated choices. But the point is—you made it. That doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human. And realizing this gives you power.
You created it, so you know where it lives. You know when it shows up. You know how it feeds. That means you also know how to starve it.

Here’s One Of Mine
One of my demons is a bad habit I’ve held onto for a long time. I used to say, “That’s just how I am,” or, “That’s just how I do things.” But I’ve come to realize—that’s not true. That’s a lie I told myself to keep the habit alive. It was a crutch. A comfort zone. But one that cost me progress.
I finally saw it for what it was: a demon I created to soothe myself when things got tough.
Now that I’ve taken ownership, I know what to do: starve the demon. Remove the environment where it thrives. Redirect the energy it once consumed into something productive.
Today, that “something productive” is writing this. By doing so, I’m doing two things:
Acknowledging and owning the demon. That gives me control over it.
Taking action. Instead of feeding it with attention or habit, I’m channeling that energy into creativity and expression.
This is my way of chasing the demon away—not by resisting it passively, but by replacing it actively.
Final Thoughts
Telling yourself “just stop” doesn’t always work.
Look inward. Look in the mirror.
Most times, the enemy we’re fighting isn’t external. It’s the version of ourselves we’ve allowed to take the wheel when we weren’t paying attention.
But here’s the good news: that also means you’re the most equipped person to face it, fight it, and win.
Replacing bad habits with good ones—that’s a proven strategy. That’s active change. That’s chasing the demon away.
Own your demons. Chase them down. Starve them.
Replace them with something better.
And then, keep going.
